The Artist in Residency (AiR) program is for artists who have achieved significant recognition for their technical and artistic
work. The residency provides artists with a place and time for research and development, creating a new body of work, developing a particular idea or continuing along a theme using glass.

AiRs will be provided with a stipend of $1,000, a designated workspace, use of kilns, flameworking, coldshop, hotshop, neon area and mould room. A limited material allowance is available based on project requirements and can be used to purchase raw materials required for the duration of the residency. Artists must be skilled in use of the equipment that they are proposing to use
and be able to work independently in the studio. We encourage artists new to glass to contact us before applying.

Share accommodation in The Chapel can be provided for interstate artists depending on availability. AiRs will be expected to participate in the residency on a full-time basis for the duration of four to six weeks. P It is part of the AiR role to engage with other artists and the public and are expected to give a public talk/ demonstration at the conclusion of their residency.

Eligibility

• • Applicants must be Australian citizens, permanent residents, or artists who have been based in Australia for more than six months prior to applying.
  • Applicants should be considered an established artist, designer or craftsperson.
  • Applicants should be trained and able to use the equipment within the facilities safely and independently or have a plan to work with glassmakers who are sufficiently trained.

Applicants are not eligible to apply if:

• • They are a student
  • They have received a residency or financial support (over $1,000) from Canberra Glassworks in the last 2 years

Details

Canberra Glassworks Mentorship offers an artist the opportunity to undertake a self-directed program to support skill building. Based on a proposal of your own requirements and skill level, this financial assistance can be used towards workshops and classes, to participate in Steps-to-Induction and to be mentored by professional artists within Canberra Glassworks or other professionals that will support growth within your artistic practice.

Interstate artists will have shared accommodation available to them in The Chapel at the Glassworks.

Artists should have basic knowledge of the equipment that they are proposing to use and a plan which supports them to develop in those areas. The successful artist will be given a budget of $10,000 for the hiring of equipment and facilities, materials, participation in their chosen class offered at the Glassworks and any mentoring costs. Part of the artist’s role is to engage with other artists in the centre and the public. The recipient of this mentorship may also be required to give a public talk/ demonstration.

Eligibility

• • Applicants must be Australian citizens, permanent residents, or artists who have been based in Australia for more than six months prior to applying.
  • Applicants must have hired CGW facilities in the last 12 months.
  • Applicants should be considere themselves a glass artist, at any stage of their career who wishes to further develop their skills in one or more areas.
    OR
    Have limited glass-making skills based on their proposal and wish to actively improve/learn and can prove their commitment to glass making in the future.

Applicants are not eligible to apply if:

• • They are a student
  • They have received a residency or financial support (over $1,000) from Canberra Glassworks in the last 2 years
  • They plan to produce a one-off body of work using glass (see Artist in Residence program)

Details

The New Graduates program is for artists who have recently graduated university, TAFE or other training programs. They must have achieved significant recognition for their technical and artistic work during their studies and be familiar and highly skilled with the equipment that they are proposing to use and must be able to work safely and independently.

The residency provides artists with a place and time for research and development, creating a new body of work, developing an idea or continuing along a theme. Each New Graduate AiR will be provided with a stipend of $500, $500 budget to be used on mentoring, a studio desk workspace access to workshop areas including use of kilns, flameworking, coldshop, hotshop and mould room.

Shared accommodation in the Chapel will be provided for interstate artists.

Graduates will be expected to participate in the residency on a full-time basis and are required to give a public talk/demonstration.

Eligibility

• • Applicants must be Australian citizens, permanent residents, or artists who have been based in Australia for more than six months prior to applying.
  • Applicants have the support of their lecturer or supervisor.
  • have completed all their studies fully in the past 12 months.
  • Applicants should be trained and able to use the equipment within the facilities safely and independently or within the limitations of the mentoring allowance.

Students with glass making experience from ANU SOAD, UniSA, Monash, SCA, Melbourne Polytechnic and JamFactory associateship programs are encouraged to apply. Graduates from other programs can also apply if they can demonstrate their ability to work independently and safely within the Glassworks workshops.

Applicants are not eligible to apply if:

• • They have completed a PhD
  • They are represented by a commercial gallery
  • They have received a residency or financial support (over $1,000) from Canberra Glassworks in the last 2 years
  • They have any outstanding units to complete. To make the most of this opportunity AiRs are expected to fully commit to this four-week program.
