As an operational glassmaking facility, Canberra Glassworks has particular safety considerations for all visitors.

Footwear must be worn at all times throughout the building. Although our public areas are regularly cleaned, we cannot guarantee that floors will be completely free of small fragments of glass. Glass can occasionally be carried from production areas on footwear, equipment and trolleys.

Additional footwear and clothing requirements apply when entering production and workshop areas or participating in some classes and experiences. These requirements will be provided with your booking or can be discussed with our team before your visit.

The main entrance and ground-floor Gallery and Shop are accessible to wheelchair users and visitors using mobility aids.

A lift provides access to the mezzanine viewing platform overlooking the Hotshop, where visitors can watch glassmakers at work.

The standard visitor route from the mezzanine to the Engine Room includes five steps. A step-free alternative is available via the wheelchair platform lift near the Neon Workshop. The platform lift has a maximum capacity of 300 kg and requires staff assistance.

If you would like to use the platform lift, please let our reception team know and a staff member will assist you.

If you use a large powered wheelchair or mobility scooter and would like to confirm access before your visit, please contact us.

Assistance animals are welcome at Canberra Glassworks. Pets are not permitted.

Please note, Canberra Glassworks is a working glassmaking facility, visitors with assistance animals should be aware that we cannot guarantee that floors, including public areas, will be completely free of small fragments of glass. This may present a risk to an animal’s paws.

Please speak with our team if you are visiting with an assistance animal. We can provide information about the building and help identify the safest available route through the facility.

Canberra Glassworks is an active working environment. Depending on what is happening during your visit, you may experience machinery and equipment noise, sudden or repetitive sounds, working furnaces and areas of increased heat.

The Hotshop can be particularly active when artists are working.

If you are sensitive to noise, heat or busy environments, please contact us before your visit. Our team can provide information about what is scheduled and help you plan your visit.

We want our tours, experiences and classes to be as accessible as possible.

If you have an access requirement, please let our Public Programs team know when making your booking. This gives us the opportunity to discuss the activity with you, understand what adjustments may be helpful and confirm access to the relevant workshop or production area.

Some glassmaking activities have specific safety requirements because of heat, equipment and the handling of hot or sharp materials. We will discuss these requirements with you where relevant.

An accessible toilet is located on the ground floor in the lift foyer.

Additional toilets are available near the working areas in the Engine Room. A key card is required to access these and so they are onyl available for participants in classes, tours and workshops.
