Canberra Glassworks offers engaging group tours and on demand classes Wednesday to Sunday, with additional Thursday evening sessions at 6:00 pm (tours only).

    1. Glassworks Tour

    Guided tour | 45 min | group min 15 max 45 | $30 pp
    Take a behind the scenes tour of the Glassworks. Students will learn how this iconic building played a vital role in the development of Australia’s planned capital city and how it has evolved into an internationally recognised glass making centre.The tour will explore questions such as:

        • What is the history of the Kingston Powerhouse, and why was it built?
        • How many ways can we make glass?
        • What is the chemistry of glass and how does that affect its colour?
        • How do different temperatures affect glass?
        • Are there sustainable ways of using glass as a material at the Glassworks?

    2. Glassworks Tour + Tile

    Guided tour & kiln forming | 90 min | group min 15 max 45 | $60 pp
    After a behind the scenes tour of the Glassworks, students will have the opportunity to get hands on and create their own glass tile. Students will cut, design and arrange glass to make their own kiln formed tiles. Postage of tiles is included.

     

     3. Hotshop Demo

    Demonstration | 45 min | group min 20 max 45 | $50 pp
    Uncover the science of glass blowing in this Hotshop demonstration. Students will have a firsthand look at the process of shaping molten glass using traditional tools and techniques. The tour will explore questions such as:

        • How has glass blowing evolved since its origin thousands of years ago?
        • What is the chemistry of glass and how does that affect its colour?
        • Is glass flexible?
        • What happens when glass is cooled too quickly?
        • Why is teamwork so important in the Hotshop?

     4. Hotshop Demo + Tile

    Demonstration & kiln forming | 90 min | group min 20 max 45 | $80 pp
    After a glass blowing demonstration in the Hotshop, students will have the opportunity to get hands on and create their own glass tile. Students will cut, design and arrange glass to make their own kiln formed tiles. Postage of tiles is included.

    1. Glass + Wood

    Glass blowing & wood carving | 6 hrs | group max 6 | $3000 per group
    Create a matching spoon and bowl set in this wood carving and glass blowing class.

    2. Glass + Silver

    Flame working | 2 days | group max 7 | $3000 per group
    Forge a unique set of glass and silver jewellery in this flame working class. 

     3. Carve on Glass

    Cold Working | 6 hrs | class max 6 | $2400 per group
    Engrave, polish, and sandblast your own designs onto glass. Perfect for those interested in design, drawing, or calligraphy.

     4. Bead Making

    Flame Working | 3 hrs | class max 7  | $2500 group
    Thread molten glass over a hot torch to make your own flame worked beads.

     5. Kiln 2 / Continuing

    Kiln forming | 3 hrs | class max 7  | $2000 group
    Blend beginning skills with new ideas in this continuing class. Previous experience required: must have completed Kiln 1 / Beginners.

     5. Neon 2 / Continuing

    Neon bending | 2 days | class max 6  | $1000 per person
    Glow up your basics skills in neon to blend and splice your new ideas. Previous experience required: must have completed Neon 1/ Beginners.
