Cross-disciplinary artist Martyn Thompson reimagines his ceramic vessels in glass, blending nostalgia and modernity through a tactile, painterly approach. Curated by Aimee Frodsham, the exhibition integrates his new glasswork with textiles, furniture, and objects from his studio, reflecting his evolving creative journey.
Martyn Thompson is an artist embracing an aesthetic defined by the touch of the hand. A visual push me / pull me between nostalgia and now, his work is characterised by a tactile and painterly language. Interior environments are at the heart of the work: his playground and source of inspiration. Thompson is a world-renowned photographer who creates masterful textiles, fabrics, and wallpaper and interior objects.
For this exhibition, Thompson has taken existing ceramic vessels and re-invents them in glass which itself is inspired by the history of pot making. His textile designs are used to form the basis for stained glass screens and lighting. Nothing is entirely new.
“I don’t visualise ideas in isolation. They have a home in the world around me. An ever evolving visual that is never an entire recreation but a gathering and redistribution/rearrangement of elements and objects spanning my lifetime. I’ve worked in various mediums. One informs the other. The past informs the present.”
History is a reflection Thompsons evolution. Furniture, objects, and ceramic and textile work from his studio and home, with new glasswork integrated into this existing world.
