2023 Artist-in-Residence, Rosalind Lemoh, reveals the untold narratives of the historic
Kingston Powerhouse in latest exhibition, TOLD. RETOLD. UNTOLD.
An exhibition of new works by 2023 Artist-in-Residence, Rosalind Lemoh, will open to the public on Thursday 7 March, with the official opening event scheduled for Saturday 16 March at 4pm.
Rosalind Lemoh is a Sierra Leonean Australian sculptor based in Gundaroo, New South Wales. Lemoh undertook a residency at Canberra Glassworks in 2023 that delved into the history of the Kingston Powerhouse and uncover things hidden or unsaid.
Within this site-specific exhibition, the narrative of Canberra’s oldest public building unfolds. It is not only an exploration of architectural history but a profound reflection on broader societal themes. Working in glass for the first time, Lemoh reframes the stories of the Powerhouse and inserts the unheard voices, particularly those of women, into historical discussion. She weaves together objects that have been lovingly and skilfully recast, both industrial and organic, to construct object-based works that draw references from still-life paintings. Drawing inspiration from iconic Western Art movements, she recreates and reimagines narratives that consider alternative histories.
Artistic Director, Aimee Frodsham commented, ‘This exhibition showcases the potential of glass beyond what visitors to the Glassworks typically expect. Lemoh approaches glass as a story telling material, focusing on the process rather than traditional techniques. It’s incredible to witness such a high quality of work from unique perspectives as a result of our residency program”.
Lemoh will present a Gallery Floor Talk at Canberra Glassworks on Saturday 20 April at 2pm to discuss the themes and experimentation behind the exhibition to the public.
