Canberra Glassworks invites the media to view the Glassworks first exhibition of the 2024 program.

2023 Artist-in-Residence, Nicholas Burridge’s solo show, BUILT GEOLOGIES, is the first exhibition in the 2024 Canberra Glassworks Program.

A showcase of new works by 2023 Artist-in-Residence, Nicholas Burridge, will launch Canberra Glassworks 2024 Exhibition Program on Saturday 20 January at 4pm. The exhibition will be opened by Dr Jacqueline Bradley, Canberra based artist and Lecturer at the National Art School, Sydney.

Nicholas Burridge is a Melbourne based multi-disciplinary artist. In 2023, Burridge undertook a residency at Canberra Glassworks to develop and explore naturally formed glass, where heat and pressure was applied to basalt, to form obsidian.

The artworks that form the exhibition BUILT GEOLOGIES are inspired by terraforming, a concept which translates to “Earth-shaping”. This vast transformational process aims to modify the atmosphere, temperature, surface topography, or ecology of a planet or moon to make it suitable for life. Burridge has developed a conceptual framework around these ideas, considering the scale of existence from human impact to industrialisation to universal forces.

The resulting raw and extremely fragile artworks are based on chance. These intriguing rock-glass hybrids exist only through human intervention, shedding light on our industrial capabilities and our indifference to the natural environment. They also serve as a poignant reminder of the immense geological forces that have shaped our planet over millennia.

Burridge will present a Gallery Floor Talk at Canberra Glassworks on Saturday 24 February at 2pm to discuss the ideas and experimentation behind the exhibition to the public.

BUILT GEOLOGIES will show at Canberra Glassworks from 20 January to 25 February 2024.
