To be skin deep is to bear the depth of having been touched by the world.
To be skin deep is not to be shallow.
to be skin deep is to honour what has endured, the fragile evidence of being here.
In Gabriella Bisetto’s luminous glass forms, the surface becomes a living threshold, a place where the inner world breathes into the outer. Each artwork carries the quiet evidence of its making: heated and cooled, slumped, scared, and prodded.
Like human skin, the glass holds memory. Every blemish and fine cut is a record of contact. a reminder that fragility and endurance coexist. The surface, often thought of as superficial, is here reimagined as the archive of experience, where life leaves its signature in texture and light.
Bisetto’s work invites us to look closely, to notice the ways beauty resides in imperfection. The marks of process and the irregularities of form become gestures of tenderness rather than flaw. Each piece seems to inhale and exhale, alive with the tension between transparency and opacity, vulnerability and strength.
In these pieces, we see not reflections of ourselves but evidence of living, a luminous recognition that every body, every surface, bears the quiet splendour of having endured.
2024 Tom Malone Glass Art Prize winner, Gabriella Bisetto has developed a sculptural practice that explores organic and visceral objects. Drawing inspiration from the shapes and structures found within the human body, she considers the connection between the human body and the act of blowing glass.
